The Beauty and Joy of Computing in the Big Apple

On the heels of the success of UC Berkeley's Beauty and Joy of Computing (BJC) program, NSF has funded a four-year project where a team from UC Berkeley will work with the New York City Department of Education and the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) to create new computer science curricular materials and to train 100 computer science teachers in the course aligned with the recently announced AP Computer Science Principles course for high school students.

"There is a fight to get people to understand the importance of computer science education," said Brian Harvey, co-lead of the UC Berkeley team. "Computing has given us a new way of understanding the world, one that has strongly influenced physics, biology, economics, mathematics, psychology and the arts. Even someone who isn't going to be a professional computer programmer should know something about computer science for the same reason that every educated person should know something about physics."

The project hopes to create a curriculum that can be used to effectively teach computer science to a diverse student population, one of the key differences of the CSP curriculum approach to CS. To learn more about this new project, check out the full NSF article here.
