Hour of Code Success Story

Hello all.  I was encouraged to share my story about the Hour of Code from this year.  I completed the hour of code in all of my classes (though, these are students who are already introduced to computer science) but as a way to get more people/students exposed I gave all of my students an assignment. They were to find another student at our school who is not currently in a computer science class and they were to take them through their hour of code. They had to document this event with screen shots and a picture of the two of them. If students could not find another student from our school I allowed them to ask a relative or friend from another school.

This ended up being a great success and here are some quotes that I received from some of the students:

"I chose him (my brother) because he has not yet chosen what program to take in highschool, so I hoped that this hour of code can help shift him toward the computer science program."

She said that she “had a great time coding thanks for the opportunity”!

"In conclusion, Hunain enjoyed coding a lot although he was thought it was going to be boring at the beginning. He enjoyed it so much that he wants to have a profession revolving around coding. As for me, it was great seeing him code. From the way he approached the stages to solving them, was amazing. This is what happened during my hour of code, with my cousin, Hunain, who now wants to attend Lane so he can take the Computer-Science courses offered here."

I also plan to print and hang all of the pictures in my room that I received from the students.  Some of my favorites involve students with their grandparents and siblings as young as 5!
