Big Data: What's In It For High School Students? (Event Archive)

Session Overview:

Practices and tools for acquisition, manipulation, analysis and visualization of data are rapidly evolving and being put to increasingly ambitious and diverse uses. This second in the series of community-wide events focused on Teaching Data, addressed the topic of "Big Data." Held on Thursday, December 5th, this panel of data experts discussed the following questions with CS10K members and other participants: Which new developments in "big data" are likely to be engaging for students to discuss? How can they approximate what the "big boys and girls" are doing in their projects? Panelists shared insights and resources.

Panelists:

  • Chaitan Baru, University of California San Diego Super Computer Center
  • Jacob Eisenstein, Georgia Tech Univeristy
  • David Skinner, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
  • Adam Maltese, Indiana University
  • Kathleen Perez-Lopez, American Institutes for Research

About the Series: Data is a key topic in both ECS and CSP. ECS features a whole unit devoted to data and computing, and one of the CSP proposed performance tasks for the AP test is data focused. Teaching data is a challenge many in the community wished to discuss with other teachers and outside experts. On Thursday, December 5th, and Friday, December 6th, a series of panels and a keynote presentation were held to launch this discussion, which will continue on the CS10K Community site. All the sessions are recorded and will be available, along with additional resources, on the CS10K Community site for later viewing and discussion.
