Room Setup:
     
(This assumes max 32 participants)

  1. One table with 4 chairs around it for each of the 8 groups of 4

  2. Wall space to display group work

 

General:

  1. Sign-in sheets with typed name, space for arrival time, space for participant signature

  2. Nametags (around the neck lanyard style)

  3. Photo release forms

  4. Speakers to play music before sessions

  5. Dry erase markers (if there is a whiteboard)

  6. Computer, projector, projection surface and Internet connection

  7. Masking tape (to help hold posters on wall)

 

For each Table: (4 participants/table)

  1. Post-it self-stick easel pads (Set of 6, 30 sheets each are $146.18 at Amazon)

  2. Pens, 3-4 Colored markers

  3. Several pads of lined 8.5x11 paper

  4. Assorted sizes of Post-it notes

 

For each Participant:

  1. Guest login for Internet access.

  2. Printed & bound copy of curriculum

  3. Copy of book Stuck in the Shallow End

  4. Flash drive with:

    1. Electronic copy of Exploring Computer Science curriculum

    2. Supplemental Materials, Scratch Files, Datafiles (from above web site)

    3. CS Unplugged curriculum

  5. Small notebook or pad of paper to be used as a “Journal”

 

For Particular Activities [optional activities shown in itallics]:

  • Unit 1 “Picture Activity” (Data Analysis, Day 10) – multiple copies of word list (50% of groups), word clouds (25% of groups)  and picture (25% of groups)  [p. 47]

  • Unit 1 “Following Directions” (Day 16) – bread in Ziploc bags, small containers of peanut butter (or some other non-allergenic substitute such as apple sauce or ketchup, small containers of jelly, knife, clean-up supplies.  Enough for 1 set for each table.

  • Unit 2 “Candy Bar Breaking” (Day 3) - uncooked pasta [linguine or spaghetti] OR chocolate bars OR twizzlers
    [if this lesson is used as part of the PD, which it isn’t normally in the summer]

  • Unit 2 “Count in Binary” (Days 10-12).  Provide 4 copies of the CS Uplugged Activity 1: Binary for the presenting group, to avoid them having to use their computers to look it up.

  • Unit 2 “Tower Building” (Day 13) – set of 10 Legos per table

  • Unit 2 “Lists and Sorting” (Days 15-16) –

    • Small dictionaries, one per table

    • 10 paper lunch bags, candy, rice or metal washers.  Enough to make 7-10 bags of items that clearly have different weights, for each table.

    • Provide 4 copies of the CS Uplugged Activity 7: Sorting for the presenting group, to avoid them having to use their computers to look it up.

  • Unit 2 “Muddy City” (Day 17) –

    • For each pair of participants a blackline master and 40 squares of cardboard or anything that can be used as markers (jelly beans, pennies, skittles, poker chips).

    • Provide 4 copies of the CS Uplugged Activity 9: Spanning Trees for the presenting group, to avoid them having to use their computers to look it up.

  • Unit 6 Robotics: dark gaffers tape [for robotics activities]
    [if this lesson is used as part of the PD, which it isn’t normally in the summer]
