How I'm Teaching and Assessing Data in My Classroom (Event Archive)

Session Overview:

Some teachers of ECS and CSP already have significant experience teaching data, and others are developing promising new approaches that will soon be tested in the classroom. In this panel event, veteran computer science teachers discussed what has worked in their classes for teaching data and what ongoing challenges and unrealized opportunities remain. This is the third in a series of community-wide events focused on Teaching Data held on Thursday, December 5th.

Panelists:

  • Cody Henrichsen, Canyons Technical Education Center, Sandy, UT
  • Kim Merino, UCLA Community School, Los Angelos, CA
  • Sean Morris, Albany High School, Albany, CA
  • Don Yanek, Northside College Preparatory High School, Chicago, IL; president of the Chicago chapter of CSTA

About the Series: Data is a key topic in both ECS and CSP. ECS features a whole unit devoted to data and computing, and one of the CSP proposed performance tasks for the AP test is data focused. Teaching data is a challenge many in the community wished to discuss with other teachers and outside experts. On Thursday, December 5th, and Friday, December 6th, a series of panels and a keynote presentation were held to launch this discussion, which will continue on the CS10K Community site. All the sessions are recorded and will be available, along with additional resources, on the CS10K Community site for later viewing and discussion.
