Resources Shared in Teaching and Assessing Data in My Classroom Panel

The following resources were shared by panelists and participants during the panel discussion for How I'm teaching and Assessing Data in My Classroom event held on Dececmber 5th, 2013.

  • Using data from a local cemetery, exploring the relationship between deaths and births. (This site from the Ecological Society of America provides an example lesson using cemetery data)
  • Rosling, H. (2006, June). "The Best Stats You've Ever Seen."  Presentation at TED Conference.
  • Wordle - word cloud generator
  • Koblin, A. (2011, March). "Visualizing Ourselves...With Crowd-Sourced Data." Presentation at TED Conference.
  • Database of text/email messages (From Beauty and Joy of Computing project) - contains a list of 500 messages categorized by tab according to the type of message (ham/spam). Example of use: Text messages have been coded as ham or spam. Investigate whether they can create an algorithm or conduct an analysis that would categorize the data in the same way (e.g., is average word length a good indicator of spam?). Most students are 9th and 10th graders that have had Algebra I.
